The table was set for that, Nico Rosberg did his job on Saturday and claimed pole position ahead of Hamilton, only needing for Felipe Massa to get in front of Lewis to claim the championship.
On the other side, Lewis' chances were way bigger needing only second.
Nico Rosberg turned the course of the weekend around on Saturday and beat Lewis both in FP3 and in qualy.
Nico Rosberg's struggles began early on when he failed to make a good start, losing the lead and a couple seconds to Hamilton.
Reason? Still unknown. Could've been pressure, could've been an issue in the car, could've been a minuscule moment of distraction, a thousandth of a second of distraction in Nico's mind. A thousandth of a second that turned into 2 seconds lost to Lewis.
A few laps into the race, Nico just stood behind in second a few secs behind Lewis, unable to really cut his lead but, as expected, pulling away from Felipe Massa, who started fourth, and the rest of the field.
The first period of pit stops did not change much. Nico's stint lasted only a couple laps more than Lewis' and he was unable to get closer to him.
Nico's hopes were a possible mistake from Hamilton, but for that to happen, someone had to put pressure on him, which neither Massa nor Nico were able to do.
Rosberg stood there, 3 seconds behind Lewis, occasionally gaining a few tenths on him when he hit trouble.
What happened at that point wasn't his fault, an unfortunate event that made his championship hopes even slimmer than before.
He began losing pace in an unbelievably short amount of time, losing between 3 and 4 seconds to Lewis Hamilton.
An ERS failure was to blame for the car's pathetic pace.
He was soon more than 10 seconds behind Lewis with Felipe catching up on him behind, it took no more than 3 laps for Massa to take P2.
Then, while Lewis drove brilliantly and cruised to an almost guaranteed win and championship, he boxed for a second and last time and found himself only a few tenths ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who took less than one lap to overtake the German.
His car's pace did everything but improve and instead, kept slowing down, losing more and more positions and being only quicker than Will Stevens' Caterham.
After getting overtaken by Daniel Ricciardo for P5, dropping to P6, Rosberg's championship chances were almost dead, only needing another nail in the coffin to seal it.
Nico, desperate, asked the team to investigate what was going on. He was sure that the ERS wasn't the only problem in his W05.
It was only a matter of time for the rest of the cars behind him to overtake him, the two quickest Hamilton and Massa lapped him some laps later and at that point, the team suggested him to retire the car, to which he responded that he would like to finish the race. Which he did in the end, coming home fourteenth, earning no points and losing out on the championship to the race winner, Lewis Hamilton, who had to stand a late attack from Felipe Massa, who cut the Briton's lead by almost 1.5 seconds per lap and coming as close as 2.6 seconds from reaching him.
Lewis crossed the finish line, fireworks blew in the Arabian night sky and Lewis confirmed what was almost sealed, he crossed that line and claimed his first world championship since 2008, becoming 2-time world champion, joining great drivers such as Mika Hakkinen, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Emmerson Fittipaldi, among others.
He stopped at the track, performed some donuts in front of the crowd and then waved the British flag on his way back to Parc Férme.
He arrived to Parc Férme, stood on top of his car, and waved the British flag in the air, in front of his mechanics, his family and many others, who were witnessing pure history, another page in the book of the history of Formula One being written.
He then celebrated with his family, his girlfriend, his parents and his brother.
Walking up the stairs for the podium ceremony, we could not see the excitement and the joy, hidden behind the helmet.
Felipe Massa, Valtteri Bottas, Toto Wolff and even Nico Rosberg, in a great act of class and sportsmanship, congratulated him for a superb season and a deserved championship.
Tears of joy came out of the young man's eyes as the British anthem played at the podium ceremony.
He raised his trophy of high in the air, everybody saw him on top of the podium, on top of the championship and on top of everything that night in Abu Dhabi.
For Nico Rosberg, I think we can look a positive side in this as he proved wrong many people that claimed he was only in Formula One for his last name, showing that he has what it takes to be a world champion, showing his strength, holding onto the end, until the last moment, fighting with everything he could and more importantly, showing that he knows how to lose, showing his respect for the others and his ability to recognize other's win and his defeat.
There's still a long way to go but I'm sure he and Lewis and all the Mercedes will come back stronger in 2015, and they won't give out the crown thy easy, despite other team's efforts for reaching them.
There's a bit of a contradiction to the conclusion of this world championship. On one side, Hamilton deserved every bit of it, dominating 11 races and performing well in much of the races but on the other side, it was unfair for Rosberg's dream to end that way, not being able to do anything with a at that was not willing to follow Nico's desires to push as hard as possible.
Behind Lewis' Silver Arrow, Felipe Massa came home second after threatening Hamilton a few tenths behind him, coming close to his first win since 2008 and claiming his best result in 2014, all of that, after a good qualy in P4 and as usual, a good start from him that earned him P3, which later became P2 as troubles hit Rosberg.
A last stint in super soft tyres is what gave him a shot at the victory which he would've probably accomplished if the race had 4 or 5 laps more.
Behind him, Valtteri Bottas sealed an amazing fourth place in the world championship standings after closing a 2-3 finish for Williams, completing the team's best result since Monaco 2009 and recovering from a bad start that dropped him to P8, thus earning another podium in a successful season for the Finn, who as Daniel Ricciardo, impressed people across the F1 world and showed he is one guy to look after in 2015.
Starting from the pit lane due to a penalty caused by aerodynamic regulations and completing another impressive result, finishing in fourth, we have Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.
He recovered a lot of ground before his first pit stops, getting close to point scoring positions and making two great stints on soft tyres and gaining more and more positions with his great pace.
Driver. Of. The. Day.
Certainly a great close to a super season for the Aussie, claiming third in the championship standings and three Grand Prix wins. One of the most exciting drivers of this year's grid. Another man to look after next year and surely a future world champion.
His teammate, Sebastian Vettel, closed a disappointing season where he could only manage a best finish of second, finishing P8 ahead of Fernando Alonso putting up battles with the Spaniard, Sergio Perez and some others, a great performance considering that, like Ricciardo, he was forced to start from the pit lane, working in an almost identical strategy to Daniel's he was also able to climb his way up to get some points.
But even despite his teammate's success and the bad car he was delivered, he was able to show many good performances, starting from the back and finishing in strong scoring positions and constantly fighting for podiums.
More importantly, I think this season helped Seb to grow up mentally, becoming a more mature and a more professional driver.
I think we are set to see the best Ferrari line up since Massa-Räikkönen with Vettel and Kimi wearing red in 2015. If they are delivered a good car, we can expect many things from them.
Danke Seb! Red Bull paid tribute to Sebastian Vettel for all the wins, titles and the good years, in his last race with the team.
With today's performance, I bet Jenson Button put a thousand more doubts on Ron Dennis' head as to who he will choose as Fernando Alonso's partner in McLaren in 2015 as Jenson followed his superb P4 finish in Interlagos with a P5 finish today in Abu Dhabi, early on the race he found himself fourth and had a potential podium finish as Nico Rosberg lost the pace but was defeated by both Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo.
It will surely be a shame to lose such a talented driver with such a unique style like him, we are waiting on December 1st to hear the announcement from McLaren.
Button's performance was highlighted by his teammate Kevin Magnussen's poor performance, finishing 6 places behind him after losing a lot of ground in the start, as usual for him in recent races and not being able to recover much after having contact with a Sauber and a Force India in the first lap.
The Dane has shown that, as Jenson, he is worth keeping at McLaren but Button's recent good form has put his place at the team in doubt with Kevin having some struggles in recent races.
If it was me who had to choose between the two, I would take Magnussen's young blood a raw pace over Jenson's experience and aggressive style, as much as it hurts losing a champ like Jenson.
Behind Jenson, in P6, arrived Force India's Nico Hulkenberg, who had a bad qualifying and then was seen angry at the opening stages of the race after receiving a 5 second stop/go penalty for forcing Magnussen out of the track. However the German was able to turn this things around and with a good management of the tyres, usually seen from the Force Indias, he and his teammate Sergio Perez, who finished 7th, were able to climb back into point scoring positions after spending most of the race trying to get into it.
Both of them are confirmed for 2015 with the team, the right decision as they will have one of the most exciting, talented and quick driver pairings in the grid.
Also, a very good season for Checo Perez to recover from the disappointment that the 2013 season was for him as he was able to beat Magnussen, his replacement at McLaren, for 4 points in a less capable car than the McLaren.
Completing the last two point scoring positions, arrived Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen.
The race of the Maranello squad was pretty much the definition of the season for them as they had a few good moments running in 5th and 6th in the opening stages of the race but losing out to Button's McLaren, the Red Bulls and the Force Indias, thus losing two spots each from their starting positions.
Despite the bad results all season long, both drivers thanked the team for their hard work and their support through team radio.
Regarding the other teams, Lotus' Pastor Maldonado's race ended as his engine failed and caught fire while we was running close to point scoring positions, leaving his point tally at only one.
Meanwhile, his teammate Romain Grosjean recovered a few spots to finish P13 ahead of Rosberg after starting last due to a penalty for changing the engine.
Toro Rosso's Jean-Eric Vergne finished P12 while his teammate Daniil Kvyät, who is set to leave to Red Bull next year, retired from the race as his car stopped early in the race.
We are still yet to see if it'll be him or Carlos Sainz Jr. who will partner Dutch Max Verstappen next year in Toro Rosso, both of them are very talented and it'd be a shame if any of the both lost the seat.
Sauber put finish to a terrible season with Esteban Gutierrez, who is set to leave the Swiss squad, and Adrian Sutil, who is set to leave as well, finishing P15 and P16, respectively.
A shame to see a team that had been successful in recent years struggling like this, hopefully they will come back better next year.
Also a shame to see a driver like Gutierrez losing his F1 seat, luckily he will be get a role as a tester in another team and a seat in other category.
Caterham, who announced that they would race in Abu Dhabi earlier this week, decided to give British Will Stevens his F1 debut as they had parted ways with Marcus Ericsson weeks ago. The British ended the race in last place while his teammate Kamui Kobayashi retired in the closing stages of the race.
Now, it will be along wait until Free Practice 1 is underway in Australia for the 2015 season start. But before that, I will be giving you the season analysis and all the details on the winter tests.
I wanna thank all the people that have stuck with me through out the whole journey, on the first complete season of this blog and I can't thank you all enough for all the visits and the support! You are amazing!
I hope we can be together again in 2015 for another season full of emotions!
See y'all later!
Forza Jules!
